In this paper, a new method that extends the Cloud Base Height(CBH) retrieved by active satellite to the passive satellite sensor field was put forward. Based on the analysis of the effects of Cloud Top Height(CTH) and Cloud Water Path(CWP) on the cloud vertical distribution, a template matching method basing CTH and CWP parameters was developed, moreover, combined with the weighted nearest neighbor interpolation, the cloud thickness was estimated. Furthermore, the CBH was retrieved through using the mature CTH product minus cloud thickness. The wavelet transform was introduced to restrain the local high frequency fluctuations. Compared with the cloud types based method, the performance of the new method is close to the estimated effects at the distance of 20-300 km and shows less estimaton error at the distance of 170-240 km. Considering the differences of cloud classification results between CloudSat and MODIS, this new method is more adaptable.
